At the beginning of the 20th century, the parish of San Bartolomé rented the land surrounding the castle, including the wall, to the poorest families of Petrer so that they could excavate their houses. However, it was not the only place in the locality where this type of construction could be found.
In total there were some 220 cave-houses spread throughout the municipal district, although most of them were located on the rambla de Puça (coves del riu); on the slopes of the castle (coves del castell and coves de la Bienvenida); and in rural areas such as Aiguarrius, Pepiosa, el Forcat and la Llobera. At the end of the 70's we witnessed the abandonment of these cave-houses, and the purchase of many of them by the town council.
